Time Lords reading Time Travel … what?

Well hello good readers!

I forgot to come by and tell you that an actual time traveller was checking out the time travelling anthology I’m in.  How about that?

And not just any time traveller but an honest to goodness Doctor…. go ahead say it … Doctor …. Who?

EXACTLY!

It’s the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann!!!
10479747_10152227809876792_2775404275666490199_n

About a week ago, one of my besties and fellow anthology author Sheila Clover-English found herself over at the Cincinnati Comic Expo where she was promoting our book.  Also there was the fantabulous Paul McGann AKA the Eighth Doctor.  Sheila remarked that Mr. McGann was gracious to his fans and an all around fantastic human being and he even posed reading our book!  How cool is that?

So I haven’t said it in a while, go ahead and pick up a copy yourself.  It’s available via ebook AND print!  Check out the book’s page here for linkage!

Until Next Time!

I am a terrrrrrrrible blogger

So I’ve decided that I am not going to keep this blog for my writing stuff alone – where’s the fun in that?  No, I am going to make this more about me and the stuff I like or dislike and what have you.

So, in that vein, I’ve decided to dedicate posts on crates or boxes.  I know what you’re thinking, what the heck is she going on about – Boxes?  Crates?  Well apparently the new thing gaining momentum are these companies that will send you samples or foods for a monthly fee.

I subscribe to two different “Boxes” or “Crates”.  They each represent a different side of me.  One is from ipsy.  Ipsy is my girlie choice.  Ipsy is the brainchild of Michelle Phan who is an amazing YouTube sensation.  She does amazing things with make-up.  Each month they send you a “Glam Bag” filled with great make-up finds, and not just make-up, but brushes, creams and hair stuff as well.  It’s $10/Month which is not bad.  To get started all you need to do is take a quiz listing your likes and interests so every bag is geared toward you.  I’ve been with Ipsy for about 3 months now and I have loved everything I’ve gotten so far.  Each month has a theme and each bag matches it.  I’ve just gotten this month’s bag about a week ago so I will do a blog on that soon.

My other monthly subscription service is to LootCrate.

EDIT: I just realized the second half of my post was eaten by a Gremlin …..  here it is ….

Okay, so LootCrate is a geek’s best friend.  Their “crate” is $20 a month but it is filled with all sorts of collectibles and swag and sometimes even Tees so it seems like a pretty decent amount to cover all that plus shipping and handling as well.  Also, a lot of the things they give you are exclusive to LootCrate so if you’re a collector that may interest you as well.  The items run the gamut from comics to sci-fi to fantasy and each month is themed as well.

Keep an eye out for my reviews!

Until Next Time,
sig

RT days 3-5

What can I say about the convention that hasn’t already been said?  I can say I didn’t attend a lot of the panels or parties, but I did manage a few.

The usual hijinks occurred at the parties and they were okay for the most part, but since a couple of the people I was with weren’t registered for the convention the rest of us felt sort of bad leaving them out – instead we went out on the town ourselves and saw the sights.

The one class I do want to talk about is the comic book writing master class I was fortunate enough to attend.  It was incredibly informative and the gifts were CRAZY good.  Lots of comics, which for a geek like me was so much fun – including one that is almost impossible to find now written by Angela Knight (well under a different pen name) I also got to meet and talk to Rambo’s father – well the author who wrote Rambo Mr. David Morrell.  What an amazing man he is.  He recently wrote a Spiderman comic (which I now own and it’s autographed thank you very much).  We spoke for a good fifteen minutes on how to write a script for a comic book (I had no idea how it was done) he was patient and answered all of my questions with a smile.  He showed me some panels for an upcoming Wolverine comic he wrote so I could see how everything tied together.  It was an amazing experience.  Who knows maybe one day I will try my hand at writing comics – wouldn’t it be great to see my name as writer of an Avengers series or X-Men?

Another group of people I want to give a small shout out to are the very nice men and women who were promoting Necroelectric.  A new webseries that is going to premiere sometime this summer.  You can check out their youtube channel here.  Eric, Zach (who looked vaguely familiar to me – I went on to find out he was a child actor), Jen and Rina were all really awesome to talk to.  I wish them all great success on the webseries (I know I’ll be watching) and yes of course I have pictures of the guys (all in the name of supporting the show of course …)

Yeah being shirtless is a plus too – but don’t get me wrong these guys are more than just good-looking they were genuinely nice guys.  It seems sad that I am awed by that, but I’ve met my fair share of guys at these things who turned out to be turds in the end.

Well that’s pretty much a wrap.  I could tell you more about the small reunion we had, but hey what happens in NOLA stays in NOLA (sorry LOL).

Until Next Year, RT!

Amazing Ink ….

As I was on my way to getting published, I asked my cousin’s husband (who is a graphic designer) if he would come up with a marking to use on the cover of my books.  He did an AMAZING job coming up with not one but seven different designs.

I chose the one I thought was closest to what I saw in my head and submitted it to the cover designer.  Once I chose the marking I also went out and made temporary tattoos of them with the idea that I would eventually get it tattooed on me.

Well I still haven’t gotten it tattooed, but one of my very best friends surprised me in NOLA when she showed me the GORGEOUS wolf tattoo she’d gotten and there on the side of the artwork was the familiar tribal marking that I had chosen.

I was both awed and flattered that someone had liked it so much they would now wear it forever.

Thanks Rose!

RT Roundup Days 1 & 2

So here I am ready to jump into my recap of my week of indulgence and debauchery also known as the Romantic Times Convention week …. okay so not so much a week of indulgence OR debauchery, I’m pretty low key, but there was a lot of laughs and good times.  So without further adieu, here begins my recap.

Ursulines_Exterior
Ursulines Exterior

So we (meaning half my friends and I) showed up in NOLA on Monday afternoon.  I didn’t stay at the convention hotel, choosing instead to stay at a wonderful little boutique hotel in the Quarter, called The Inn at Ursulines.  It’s part of a group of 4 such hotels around the Quarter.  The place was GORGEOUS, it is a renovated Creole Cottage that was once owned by Marie Laveau.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures of the room, but if you’d like to see it, head on over to their website.  Prices were great and the room was spacious and the amenities were really good (even if they didn’t have a nozzle for the hairdryer LOL).

For the most part day 1 was used to settle in and see a little bit of the sights around us.  I did mention to my bestie that just down the street from our hotel was a convent rumored to have housed vampires …. needless to say she freaked a little LOL.  Me, I love that kind of folklore (don’t get me wrong when it comes down to it I am a grade A chicken, but as long as it doesn’t bother me, I am okay with it).

We ate a little, drank a bit and just walked around taking in the atmosphere.  If you think the Quarter is only hopping during Mardi Gras, you would be wrong.

Day 2 was more cafedmof the same, I know it sounds sort of boring, but trust me when you’re surrounded by friends you haven’t seen in over a year, even just sitting around and talking is a whole lot of fun, and if you had my friends then there’s the extra laughter that gets added to it.  We did have an impromptu photo session by the Mississippi River and they had their first experience at Cafe Du Monde (mmm Beignets and Coffee).  If you go to NOLA you must go to that place, the beignets come out warm and are soft and delish and the coffee au lait ain’t half bad.

We also decided to do a tour, a Vampire Tour.  We went with a tour group that I have used before and have never been disappointed with.  Haunted History Tours do various tours around the Quarter and their guides are friendly and know the city inside and out.  On my previous 2 vampire tours (see told ya I liked them – I’ve also done their voodoo, ghost and cemetery tours) I’ve had a guide by the name of Jonathon – he’s great, dresses like a pirate, not bad to look at and is a fantastic storyteller.  This time around we had Jyl, who was amazing as well.  Fantastic woman, who was really into the lore (including wearing fangs).  Remember where my hotel was?  Yup we parked right outside of the convent to hear about the happenings and I scared the crap out of my bestie (totally unintentionally, but hilarious).  After the tour we spent about 15 minutes just talking to her, she was full of information and a hoot as well.

I hope to have pictures to add soon, but they are being edited as we speak.  Oh oh may I add that I have the most amazing friends?  One of which, Mrs. Rose Germano, showed up with a beautiful wolf tattoo and there on the edge of it was my Dark Wolf Marking.  Squeeee!!!

Well, that’s all for now.  Until Next Time,

RT14 Giant Book Fair – My take on it

By now several of you may have heard or read about the book fair this year.  If you haven’t all you need to do is search for it and you will find dozens of tweets or blog posts about it.  Here’s my take.

I am a small press author, my publisher is recognized by RWA (which is why I submitted to them) and I am now also an indy author, since my anthology is self-published.  This was also my third year signing at RT.  As only one of my books is in print, I didn’t sell any books and instead decided to hand out flats, trading cards and other swag promoting my books.

I say this to give a little background so you know this isn’t my first trip down this road.  In previous years the indy and ebook signing was on the night before the big traditional book fair, I loved this because I’m a reader as well and I liked having the opportunity to peruse the aisles of some of my favorite authors while thinking one day, ONE DAY I will be sitting in this room.  I mean what author wouldn’t want to?  The room is usually STUFFED with readers looking for good books.  And every writer wants to get their books in front of as many readers as they can.  Right?  So imagine my surprise and elation when I got the notice that registration for RT this year was opening and that any author signing had to register quickly to secure a spot because indy, small press and traditional authors were being combined for the first time!  YES!  I thought to myself, I am going to have the opportunity to be seen by readers who may otherwise not have sought me out.  It was again stated in a letter I received last month – “One Stop Shopping” was the quote from the letter.  I did a happy dance I would be IN the room.  We were also told there would be 2 authors per 6 foot table so we would have 3 feet of space to put out our swag and/or books.  Excellent!

Well it wasn’t exactly that way when Saturday rolled around and I was told that indy and small press authors were signing in a room across the hall from where traditionally pubbed authors were.  Disappointment set in.  I was also fairly sad to see that the 2 authors per table deal also did not pertain to my room.  We barely had 2 feet of space. We were scrunched in together.  Get to know your neighbor, hope you like them, we joked as we squished in and tried to make room for our books, flats and swag.  For authors who made 3 foot banners, well they were out of luck as they didn’t want to encroach on their neighbors.

Still I had a good time.  I just wish that if we were going to be separated from the traditionally published why not just keep our signing on a separate day?  This way readers could do both without having to sacrifice time on either side.  Or I would have REALLY liked to see the authors combined as the registration and letter said they would be and have one room for A-L and the second for M-Z.

I won’t speak about the volunteer who may or may not have told people that my room was an aspiring author room, or if readers were ushered into the traditional room over ours regardless of what they wanted, I didn’t see it or hear it so I can’t say if it’s true.  I will say that my room was VERY light on visitors in the first 30 minutes of the fair and only slightly picked up after that.

I’m not angry, just really disappointed in the way this was handled.  It was almost a bait and switch scenario.  I registered well before I intended to in order to secure my place at the GIANT BOOK FAIR only to be regulated to a place I’ve had at my previous two signings, worse I had LESS table space at this one than in my previous two signings.

Still, I had a good time, met new authors who were witty and a pleasure to sit beside and I met some new readers that I pray will take a chance on me and that’s all that really matters to me when all is said and done.  Oh!  I was interviewed about the anthology and gave out lots of swag as well.

I just hope the powers that be who put this together, listen to everyone’s input and take this as a learning experience and don’t repeat it.

Until Next Time,

Guest Post – Tamara McHatton & Lysa Demorest

Just as I promised today I am welcoming to my blog Co-Authors of the upcoming book GEMINA: THE LOST LEGIONNAIRESTamara McHatton & Lysa Demorest.

Enjoy while they lay out where the inspiration for the story came from, how they worked together to write it and of course that cover!

Tamara : So, it’s mid-November and I get this PM on Facebook from my publisher: I’d love to get Charles on a cover, but haven’t had the right venue for him. I answered her: I agree. We need to get Charles on a cover, could it be a short? When would it have to be in by? How many words? She came back with…Well if we want it to go to print it would have to be at least 100 pages total, anywhere from 55k to 75k words. To have it in print by RT, I’d want to publish by December, pretty darn tight. We might be able to push that a little bit if I do the editing. Think you can do it?

I did some research, and found a Gladiator kind of photo Charles had put out on GeminaTheLostLegionnairesCoverArt72dpiFacebook…that was my inspiration, coz he’s now has a Spartacus kinda guy look.

I responded: I’d want to do it so it could go to print, for Charles’ sake…and I think I have someone who could help me get this done.

Insert superhero sidekick theme.

Lysa: And that’s where the PM from Facebook came in. Let me tell you, it didn’t sound anything like the superhero sidekick music that it should have been. As a Felicity-type from CW’s Arrow though, I figured I could roll with it. After the initial spaz, “Ah!” freak out moment that lasted about a whole second, I told her, “Yeah, sure, we got this.” Of course, this was during one of my easy classes while working on my English Literature degree.

Tamara: So of course pinged you. I knew you were very knowledgeable on this time period, and great with ideas, and terrific as an editor, and so eager and willing, that you wear me out! LOL. That’s when I told my publisher who my cohort was: Lysa Demorest used to be my first assistant with SUITE Magazine. Anything I needed, she could do, to include writing last minute articles when authors fell through… My publisher said, fine, so you and I agreed to work on this together to get it done quickly.

A couple of days later you and I started playing “what if” and by the next week we had a simple plot outline worked up and spent another week fine-tuning it, noting what we had to research, where it would go. By the end of the month, I let our publisher know that you and I were plotting all of it out, and then in December we’d write the story. Continue reading

But I just wanted to tease another guest post – this one will go up on Monday March 10 and will feature two wonderful women (who I can call my friends) who collaborated on an upcoming book.
